A Potlatch Ceremony - Divisions 10 and 11

Master of the Ceremonies

When the master of the ceremony spoke everybody was quiet. The masters of the ceremony told us about what is coming up. The Potlatch Roles are: The Welcome Speech, Opening Remarks, Prayer Blessing of  People, Prayer Thanking for food. After those speeches we had boys serving food and then some of the boys cleaned up the empty bowls. After that we had: Ladies Dance, A Giveaway Speech and Closing. We had a great time.    Michelle Liu

Potlatch Speeches

In every Potlatch there are always speeches. The speech  is always important to Native people. The last day that we had a Potlatch we made speeches because we want to show you how important  the speeches are to the Native people. Each speech has it own meaning. Most of the speeches were about residential school!        Edward Yao

Our  Potlatch Soup

When we were getting ready for the potlatch, the girls chopped up potatoes carrots for the soup. The soup was delicious! We had a big bowl filled with soup! After we had soup, we had jello! We also made placemats  for everybody. We also brought juices for our guests, and for ourselves. The  food was excellent!                     Janine Yeung

Here is some sacred sweetgrass, sage and an eagle  feather. We lit the sweetgrass and the aroma filled the air!!         Polly Lee

Button Blankets

Some of the girls in Ms. Goodtrack's class made button blankets. These are the people who dance at the potlatch Winnie, Val, Polly, Mer and Cynthia. We made button blankets out of black tissue paper and decorate it with ovoids out of the three main shapes. The three main shapes are ovoids, u-shapes  and s-shapes .Plus we used round circles to make our button blankets. The  three traditional colors is black, white and red. Black was made out of charcoal left after a fire. White was made out of seashells dust. Red was made out of salmon eggs or berries. Nowadays we can use all colours.       Cynthia Mah

Our Special Potlatch Giveaway Items

In our potlatch we gave away a lot of things. We gave away a bentbox that we painted with the three tradional native colours red, white, and black. The pin cushion is like a pillow that sewn by ourselves. The reason we gave flour and sugar is so our guests can take the sugar/flour home so their parents can use it to cook. Everyone on Ms. Goodtrack's class had a job to do. Cavan and Michelle were the masters of the ceremony. Do you know that a long time ago the potlatch was against the law? I hope Mr. Beriault enjoyed what we served them and what we gave them!                Alice Cheung

Bent Boxes

At our potlatch we made bent boxes, how we made the bent boxes? We first brought a shoebox to school. When we got  art for the period, we got to work on it. First we took acrylic paint and painted it. The color we used was brown. Few days later we used the 3 traditional colors to paint the N.W.C. Pictures like bears and other animals. We also used shapes that N.W.C. use. Then we showed it to Ms Goodtrack. Then we left it to dry. So that it how we made the bent boxes in the potlatch.                                Bonnie Wong

Blanket Giveaway

At our potlatch we had a blanket giveaway to Mr. Beriault and Mr. Colpitts. The blanket boys job is to put a blanket over Mr. Beriault's and Mr. Colpitts' shoulders. Ms. Goodtrack took pictures when it was happening. At N. W. C.  potlatches, the people go shopping for years and make blankets too! They pile up blankets! There could be over fifty blankets piled up!

Potlatch Food

At the potlatch there was jello. It was not regular jello, it was a mix! Everybody brought jello mix and Teresa and the girls in our class mixed the jello before the Polatch. They didn't mix one by one they mixed it all together! Right before the jello was going to be served, Teresa put ice-cream on top of jello , and a cherry on top. The jello was black, the ice-cream was white, and the cherry was red. These three colors are the traditonal colors of the N.W.C  people.
