Norquay Volunteer Tea: June 12, 2003

We are most fortunate at Norquay that we have volunteers from the community – people without students in our school, whose commitment to children and to public education brings them into our school regularly to read with and tutor our students.  Special mention to Mr. Lam, the father of our teacher Mr. Lam, and the organizer of the after-school Chinese classes who translates our notices and newsletters into Chinese.
And, of course, our parents, who help in so many ways – in the classrooms, on field trips, translating for parent-teacher meetings, for other parents who need help, those who come to PAC meetings, and parents who do extraordinary jobs for the children.
This year we would like to recognize  two special sets of parents who are leaving Norquay.  Their children are graduating and moving to secondary school.  These parents have made unique and significant contributions to our school.
Over the years Nellie and Alex Tang have been active as fund-raisers for Norquay.  Through ingenuity and their own generosity, they have provided the school with much extra money.  They have donated scooters for raffling and have collected for, organized and run their own two-person garage sales with all proceeds going to Norquay.  We have been so fortunate to have had their support as parents over the years that Aaron as attended our school.
Wanda and Rick Seto are also going to be missed as Stefanie moves to Gladstone.  Rick has used  his own volunteer work to have his employer, Telus, provide Norquay with money.  Telus rewards its employees for volunteer work by donating money to an organization designated by the employee.  Rick has chosen Norquay several times.
Wanda is our chief “Volunteer Mother”.  She is at the school working so frequently that we think of her as a staff member.  She and Ron Citynski spent hundreds of hours over the years ensuring that the crossing at Slocan Street was a safer place. She is always available to drive to sports events or fieldtrips, help count hot dog money and Values Books money, act as a translator, or do anything else that needs doing at the school. Her help has been invaluable over the years and we will certainly feel her absence.
To all our volunteer parents, we so much appreciate all you do to make Norquay a fine place for children. Thank you.
