Norquay School - Terry Fox Run

The Bravery of Terry Fox….by Benton Li, Division 5
Terry made the Marathon of Hope so he could raise money for cancer research. In the marathon he raised over $1,000,000. After Terry was gone, cancer research raised over $200,000,000. Now people still honour him for what he has done with a Terry Fox Run. Terry was like a miracle to cancer research and the world.

Terry Fox's courage is known to everyone in Canada and many other countries. The marathon of hope began when Terry got an artificial leg and he started thinking about others and didnt want other people to suffer the pain he had suffered from cancer, so he tried to raise money for cancer research. He began running across Canada on April 12, 1980 in St. John's, New Foundland. He managed to run 5,373 kilometres in 143 days. That means that he ran at about 20 kilometres per day.

He ran every day but only rested one day out of 143 days. That day was Christmas Eve. He managed to raise $360 million or more in those days that he ran. He wished to get a dollar from every Canadian and he did. He made it all the way to outside of Thunder Bay. Then, the cancer that was in his leg went to his lungs and suffered from that and died.

Terry Fox is a couragous man and even now in the year 2005 we are still continuing Terry's dream to raise money for cancer research. It's now the 25th year that we are continuing his dream. Some people actually went across Canada with Terry Fox in his long run. Now the Terry Fox run has attracted 30,000 other people to join the run. They all raised $3.5 million together. Terry Fox didn't want to become a hero but now he is.
